Alan Beans distinguishing art!  The tools Alan Bean used to explore the Moon were also used by him to put the Moons stamp on each painting he created. Exact replicas of his Moon boots were used to make footprints across the paintings surface, reminiscent of the Apollo boot prints remaining on the Moon today. Streaks etched on the paintings surface are from the same geology hammer he used on the Apollo 12 mission. Finally, a sharp edged bit from one of the core tubes is used to make the circular indentations in the surface. These are beautifully captured in each edition.

This My Brother, Jim Irwin Canvas Artist Proof Limited Edition Print is exciting Moon Art and a defining classic by Alan Bean.

Alan Bean was the only human being in history to become a fine art Master Artist to paint various Apollo mission experiences based on his own personal real experience of having been to, and walked on the Moon!   Here are a few words about this fine art by Alan Bean:

"Jim Irwin was assigned as my back up for Apollo 12. He knew his job extremely well. I knew that if anything happened to me at the last minute, Jim would do an excellent job on our mission and fit right in with Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon.

It was easy to like Jim, he had a personality that suggested you could have a lot of confidence in him. He wasn’t an individual that tried to convince you that what he was doing was right or what you were doing was wrong. It was more like he wanted to work with you and find the best way to do something together.

He flew a wonderful flight on Apollo 15 in July, 1971. He and Dave Scott were on the moon for three days, in what I felt was the greatest mission of Apollo up to that point. Not only because theirs was the first extended lunar scientific expedition, but because of their skill. Dave Scott and Jim Irwin both worked extremely hard and displayed some heart irregularities. It was only after they got back that they discovered the extent of NASA’s concern for them and worry that this situation may have caused some permanent damage.

After all the post-flight activities were complete, Jim left NASA and founded High Flight, an interdenominational evangelical organization devoted to spreading his word, his witnessing, his experience to other people. Jim described being on the moon as a deeply spiritual experience. Less than two years later, Jim experienced the first of several serious heart attacks. He felt that his physical efforts on the moon, combined with the way the human body eliminates excessive potassium and other minerals in zero gravity, had damaged his heart. He died of a heart attack in 1991 at the age of sixty-one.

We used to see each other at astronaut reunions or accidentally in airports from time to time, and when we parted company, he would put his arm around me and say, “Well I hope to see you again soon, brother.” It was a surprise the first time as that isn’t the way one astronaut talks to another and I didn’t know what to say. After this happened a few times, I wanted to reply because I felt very close to him but I just couldn’t make myself say those words. Since I left the space program and became an artist, I think differently about myself and my life. I miss Jim a lot and I understand how I miss him and respect him as the brother I never had."

This My Brother, Jim Irwin signed by Alan Bean captures all the vivid color and brilliance of the original Alan Beans work of art.

The hallmark of a Master Space Artist is in their ability to show different types of moments in the harsh environment of space and its different elements.  This art is outstanding for the way Alan Bean captures the moment and portrait of his brother working on the Moon.  Alan Bean knew Jim irwin well, as they had spent many hours together training when Jim had previously been assigned as the back-up Lunar Module Pilot for Alan Bean on Apollo 12.

Apollo 15 was the first of what were termed "J missions", long stays on the Moon, with a greater focus on science than had been possible on previous missions. It was also the first mission on which the Lunar Roving Vehicle was used.  Landing next to the magnificent Hadley RIlle, involved the most dangerous descent to-date by the Apollo 15 crew, as it descended between Mountain Tops!

Please read the story in Mission Profile below about Apollo 15 and about Alan Bean.

Mission Profile (source Wikipedia)

Apollo 15 was the ninth manned mission in the United States Apollo program the fourth to land on the Moon, and the eighth successful manned mission. It was the first of what were termed "J missions", long stays on the Moon, with a greater focus on science than had been possible on previous missions. It was also the first mission on which the Lunar Roving Vehicle was used.

The mission began on July 26, 1971, and ended on August 7. At the time, NASA called it the most successful manned flight ever achieved.

Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin spent three days on the Moon, including 18½ hours outside the spacecraft on lunar extra-vehicular activity [EVA]. The mission landed near Hadley Rille, in an area of the Mare called Palus Putredinus [Marsh of Decay]. The crew explored the area using the first lunar rover, which allowed them to travel much farther from the Lunar Module [LM] than had been possible on missions without the rover. They collected 77 kilograms [170 lb] of lunar surface material. At the same time, Command Module Pilot Alfred Worden orbited the Moon, using a Scientific Instrument Module [SIM] in the Service Module [SM] to study the lunar surface and environment in great detail with a panoramic camera, a gamma-ray spectrometer, a mapping camera, a laser altimeter, a mass spectrometer, and a lunar sub-satellite deployed at the end of Apollo 15s stay in lunar orbit [an Apollo program first].

James Benson Irwin (March 17, 1930 – August 8, 1991) was an American astronaut, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and a United States Air Force pilot. He served as Apollo Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 15, the fourth human lunar landing. He was the eighth person to walk on the Moon and the first, and youngest, of those astronauts to die.

Between July 26 and August 7, 1971 – as the Apollo 15 Lunar Module Pilot (LMP) – Irwin logged 295 hours and 11 minutes in space. His extravehicular activity (EVA) on the Moons surface amounted to 18 hours and 35 minutes of the mission time (an additional 33 minutes was used for Commander David R. Scott to do a stand-up EVA by opening the LMs docking hatch to survey the surroundings and take photographs). Irwin and David Scotts mission was more science-based than previous missions, which meant that they received intensive geological training to meet the demanding nature of the J-Mission profile. This extra training is credited with allowing them to make one of the most important discoveries of the Apollo era, the Genesis Rock.

Apollo 15 landed in the Moons Hadley-Apennine region, noted for its mountains and rilles. As a J-Mission, they would spend more time on the Moon than previous missions, to allow for three EVAs. As well, Irwin was the first automobile passenger on the Moon as Scott drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) carried along for this mission in the Lunar Module (LM) Falcons Descent Stage. Scott and Irwins stay on the Moon was just under three days at 66 hours and 54 minutes.

About Alan Bean

This fine art offering is from a terrific Fine Art Artist and Astronaut who walked upon the Moon and is truly a Lifetime opportunity.

Obtaining Alans work such as this in future years is nigh impossible, especially for a Historic Subject such as this.  Thats how it Felt to Walk Upon The Moon which sold out commercially in 1988 soon after its release, is one such example.

Alan Bean Original Paintings now typically sell for US250,000 to US$500,000, but were sometimes US30,000 in the 1980s.  Alan Bean Master Art Work Limited Editions typically increase in value over time as well.

Astronaut and artist Alan Bean was not only the first artist to paint a world other than our Earth who actually went there, he was the first in history to paint our Earth after viewing it from space. His arts significance as the original human interpretative record of mans first off-world experience will only increase in its importance and value over time.

Alan Bean, Astronaut and Alexey Leonov, Cosmonaut were the only Space Travellers to become Fine Art Artists. Enjoy the beauty of Alan Beans Moon Art upon your wall from the only Astronaut who walked upon the Moon and then became a fine art Space Artist.

Collectors Hints (Space and Aviation Firsts © 2017-2023).

Collectors Hint 1 - What is a Canvas Artist Proof Limited Edition Print?

Artist Proofs are a special early subset of the regular limited edition, limited to the first 10% of the print run.  An ‘Artist Proof’ is just that, an ‘Artist Proof’ and may or may not be numbered at the discretion of the Artist.  They therefore usually sell for 20-50% more than the regular edition print.

The Artist Proofs are the first prints pulled off a fresh "stone", the plate which was drawn or etched by the artist to create the Limited Editions.

A really serious or specific Collector usually prefers the Artist Proof if one is available, because of the extra quality and value they represent.

Collectors Hint 2 – What is a Fine Artwork’ Canvas Limited Edition Print?

Fine Artwork Canvas is intended to reproduce the presentation of the original oil or acrylic painting on a stretched canvas.

This is absolutely the option of choice if you have the desire and preference to mirror the original painting with the 3D texture and look of a beautiful Canvas.

They are stunningly beautiful in their presentation for that ‘Stand Out Impressiveness’ upon your wall.
