Background:  Boy Scout Rank badges were used to recognize the completion of various requirements by youth as they progressed through Scouting.

Tenderfoot Scout / Second Class Scout / First Class Scout / King’s Scout or Queen’s Scout

Rank Badges:          Boy Scout Rank badges were used to recognize the completion of various requirements, that varied over time, by youth as they progressed through Scouting. A Tenderfoot, Second Class and the First Class Scout could then be so identified by the appropriate badge on their uniform. 

Metal badges and then embroidered badges were used for this purpose. Over time, the design of each of these Rank Badges evolved with different manufacturing styles. Different designs of the metal badges gave way to embroidered badge designs in felt, ribbon bound (brown, black and white back), canvas, cut edge and rolled edge fabric.

Passionate about Rank / District / Area / Region Badges?

The trading & collecting of district badges have been a MAJOR focus of collectors of Scout memorabilia for a long time.  Youth and leaders alike attending Scouting Jamborees and other such events have traded such badges for decades. Vintage camp blankets were typically interspersed with these treasures.

This is one Scout collectible that I have never fully understood and do not collect.
