What is Mino Washi?

Mino Washi is a general term for Japanese paper made in the Mino region of southern Gifu Prefecture. Mino Washi also includes machine-made washi, but handmade washi is called "Mino handmade washi," and handmade washi with a traditional manufacturing method that meets certain requirements is called "Hon-Mino-gami. Hon-Mino-gami refers to the one that meets the requirements for designation as an important intangible cultural property, and the amount of production is said to be about 10% of all Mino-washi products.

There are handmade and machine-made Mino Washi, but the handmade one is called "Mino handmade Washi," and the one made by the traditional manufacturing method that meets especially certain requirements is called "Honmino paper. Hon-Mino-gami is designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
