About the company Manufaktur Klaus Kolbe

The name Schwibbogen comes from architectural usage. It refers to a “floating arch” that stands ly between two parts of the wall. Whether this name was also the inspiration for the arched tunnel entrance to the mines, known as the “mouth hole”, is quite likely, but cannot be proven precisely. It is clearly proven that the Erzgebirge candle arch has its origins in mining.

The oldest documented candle arch was made in 1778 by the mountain blacksmith SF Teller in Johanngeorgenstadt.

It shows the depiction of the “Fall” of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from paradise, which is typical of the oldest pieces. These depictions remained a defining motif for the following decades. Only after around 1820 did a change occur, with the miner himself becoming the dominant motif.

Since the beginning of the 20th century In the 19th century, the function, distribution and motif design of the candle arch changed significantly. As a popular light bearer, it has now also found its way into Christmas parlors in the Ore Mountains. Since then, the “Schwarzenberg candle arch” made of metal, made for an after-work show in 1937, and the “Seiffen candle arch” made of wood, designed by the then director of the Seiffen toy school, Max Schanz, around 1935, have become particularly important. Its defining motif is the well-known Seiffen Church. Surrounded by small miners houses, it stands in the center of the arch in a snowy winter landscape. And this little “Seiffen candle arch” became crucial for my further professional development.

As a trained furniture carpenter, he decided in 1990, together with his wife, daughter and son-in-law, to set up a small, independent family business and thus take the plunge into the harsh conditions of the market economy. After training in drawing and painting with the painter Max Christoph, he finally wanted to pursue his real interests as an artisan.

The starting point for his new activity was the aforementioned “Seiffen Candle Arch”, which was only made by master wood turner Arthur Stiehl, but who wanted to stop production. From him he acquired the rights to continue producing the bow, which has formed the basis of their work ever since. What was particularly important to them was to preserve this valuable product of Seiffen folk art for posterity and to develop it sensibly in the spirit of genuine preservation of tradition. The following pages of our new catalog will show you that they have succeeded in doing this through new motif variants and other additions, including mechanization.

The prerequisites for this were a lot of creativity, inventiveness and the exclusively manual nature of our manufactory with its highly motivated and qualified employees. Their candle arches are no longer just traditional light bearers at Christmas time, but their further developments also reflect the mining and cultural history of the Ore Mountains.

And with these little works of art we wish you a lot of joy and contemplative hours.
