No treatment

This is the finest quality ever found, there is no treatment, the shell has just been cut and polished. Exceptional color for this rare and noble material. Not found on the current market, this is a collectors item or to be fitted by a very qualified jeweller.

The last photo shows the whole shell as an example (it is not the one with which the cabochon was made).

Spondylus is a genus of bivalve molluscs, the only genus in the family Spondylidae. They are known in English as Spiny Oysters although they are not, in fact, true oysters.

Archaeological evidence indicates that people in Neolithic Europe traded Spondylus shells to make bracelets and other ornaments for much of the Neolithic period. The main period of use seems to have been around 5350 to 4200 BC.
